Wasted Wit from one half's perspective...

The day was December 10, 2007. The place, Plaza Lanes in Madison, New Jersey. What started as a seemingly innocent evening out amongst two friends would be duly noted as the birth date of the greatest thing yet to be discovered on the Internet.

I was doing my best to take this lovely girl, Courtney, out in an indiscreet manner, as she was a friend and in the event I sensed things weren't going to work, I could play it off and not sacrifice camaraderie. A good failsafe to an enjoyable evening is a night of smashing pins at the local alley; and that was exactly what took place. While waiting for a lane to open up, conversation was struck and joyously never flatlined. Amongst the chit chatted about was the realization that we both had jobs where our existence was being wasted. Fast forward a few moments to when we were settled in to the lane, and it came to my attention that we needed a team name, since it was not going to be a match pitting myself against her. Minutes pass, and out of my mouth stammers Wasted Wit, with a brief explanation in tow of course. Truth be told, I was a little uncertain how it would be received.

To my delight, it hit the bull's-eye. And not only that, but because I found her personality and loveliness to be out of this world, or simply beautifully amazing, it was even more comforting to find that our minds meshed flawlessly and that the metaphorical gears started turning. One thing lead to another, and after a few good games where our skills broke even, it was slightly decided that some sort of web site to host our wit would be needed. And so it began...

I did a little bit of homework to see what it would take to procure the domain and launch the site. After a few days of digging on message boards and gathering information from pals, I made the initial purchase. WastedWit.com was officially ours. With future plans bigger than the sky itself and minimal HTML knowledge, it seemed initially that we dove headfirst into the shallow end of an empty swimming pool. Luckily, my cousin is somewhat of a computer genius and I turned to him for advice on constructing our new home away from home. Being the nice gentleman that he is, he absorbed the project into his daily workflow and within a few weeks, a beta version was built. In the meantime, a forum was established at wastedwit.freeforums.org to start the ball rolling. Interest was gauged and our member count soared to 16 before switching it off to transfer it to its new home at the main site. On top of that, we had limited edition t-shirts made after a moment of sheer brilliance by Courtney, who is solely responsible for that checkmate.

Where it stands right now, Wasted Wit is still in its infancy. With the continual expansion of ideas, the addition of pieces, and a fancy parade into the future, it would be best to check back often to keep on your toes when it comes to the world of Wasted Wit.

Wasted Wit: It Started as a Bowling Team...

It was to be, I thought, a simple night of bowling and conversation, an enjoyable end to a rather long and unstimulating day at work. Bryan and I exchanged simple pleasantries, and before long the "How was your day?" chat had turned into a conversation about our utterly mundane forms of employment. We soon found that one of the common factors in our shared hatred of our jobs, perhaps the most important common factor, was the lack of a creative outlet. Our passion for various kinds of artistic expression was entirely wasted while we spent our days chained to desks, putzing around on the internet.

While our gears were grinding over this bitter affliction, I found myself increasingly frustrated with my own lackluster bowling performance. In an effort to boost my plunging self-esteem, Bryan proposed that we play as a team rather than as opponents, thus eliminating the need to consider myself the loser of the outing. Fair enough, but this team - I insisted - needs a name. Referencing our previous conversation, Bryan suggested Wasted Wit and I wholeheartedly agreed. And so Wasted Wit was born, and as the bowling continued so did our discussion of our need for a place to channel our creative energy. The rest, as they say, is history.

Or is it? I prefer to think of Wasted Wit as a forward-looking endeavor, not just because it is still in the very early stages of development, but because there is unlimited room for growth. For me, Wasted Wit is a Peter Pan project, an idea that will never fully grow up. At its root it is the essence of creativity, a concept that, by its very nature, keeps expanding. So it starts here wth a website, with the hopes of building a community, but there has already been talk of branching out into other mediums. I am confident that this branching out will steadily continue, that Wasted Wit will be, like its founders and members, perpetually changing, growing, and improving.
